Silent Valley National Park
The Silent valley National Park is highly popular in the state of Kerala, still it is one amongst those that are untouched by the passage of time. Its topographical seclusion ensured that the area remains uninhabited and continues to preserve the flora and fauna that house it. Visitors get very permission to explore a limited area and overnight stay is discouraged. A special permission needs to be sought from the Wildlife Warden for this purpose. The park is located on the Kundali Hills of Western Ghats, 65 km north east of Palakkad.

Palakkad

The district of Palakkad known as the granary of Kerala, is a land of valleys, hillocks, rivers, forests, mountain streams, dams and irrigation projects. Situated at the foot of the Western Ghats, this is the gateway to Kerala from the north. Palakkad derives its name from the Malayalam words Pala ( Alsteria scholaris) and Kadu (forest) which goes to prove that this place was once a beautiful stretch of forests covered with the sweet scented flowers of the Pala tree.




Malampuzha
Malampuzha has something to offer to everykind of visitor. There is a wonderful rose garden with 100 species of roses for your to savour, a Snake Park with large variety of reptiles to send a chilly sensation down your body, a ropeway ride at a height of 60 feet to view the garden from above, a Fancy park with as many as 20 ride options and a KTDC Garden House offering pedal boat, motor boats, row-boats and water scooters for a trip round the reservoir. If none of the above interest you, then you can simply have a look at the sculpture of bare bodied Yakshi (demon) with head flung back and raised fisted hands positioned close to ears. Malampuzha is an ideal picnic spot in every sense and is just 14 km from Palakkad.




Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary
The Wildlife Sanctuary, 47 km from Palakkad is an excellent place to get a good sight of elephants, gaurs, chitals, sambhars, deers, Nilgiri langurs, wild dogs, leopards and not to forget tigers. The park occupies an area of 277 sq km between Annamalai hills and Nellliyampathy at a height of 980 - 4600 feet. There are three dams within the sanctuary where you can have the pleasure of boating amidst beauty.

Situated on the way to Nelliampathy, the Pothundy Reservoir Complex is a charming location for picnics and half-day





River Kanjirapuzha
24 kms from Palakkad, Kanjirapuzha (River Kanjira) is a magnificent lake. An evergreen forest, the 'Vettilachola', provides the backdrop to the lake, surrounded by hillocks. During the rainy season, the mist-draped mountains create a picturesque landscape.

Mangalam Dam
The Mangalam Dam is constructed on the river Cherukunnapuzha, a tributary of the river Mangalam. A popular picnic site, the dam is located 48 kms south of Palakkad town. The reservoir fringes on the forest area, where there are deer, wild elephant and variety of birds. There are also beautiful parks and lawns adorned with statues.




Meenvallam
A Meenvallam waterfall is around 8kms from Thuppanad junction on the Palakkad- Manarkkad route. It is a combination of enchanting beauty and scenic splendor. The water falls from nearly 20 to 25 feet and the depth is around 15-20 feet. There are 10 steps of waterfalls of which eight are located in the upper hills inside the dense forest. They are inaccessible, only the remaining two steps are accessible. One has to hire a jeep from Koomankund junction and then trek a distance of 1.5 km by crossing the river Thuppanad.




Dhoni
A Dhoni waterfall is a 3 hours trek from the base of the Dhoni Hills. A thick reserve forest surrounds it. Dhoni is about 15 kms from Palakkad.




Kollengode Palace

19 Kms. South of Palakkad, Kollengode (the abode of blacksmiths), enriches the pristine beauty of rural Palakkad. The Kollengode Palace, the Vishnu Temple and the poet P. Kunhiraman Nair memorial, are worth visiting. Seethakundu and Govindamali hills, near Kaachanakurichi are ideal and for adventurous trekkers.




Killikkurussimangalam
The birth place of Kunchan Nambiar is in a small village named Killikkurussimangalam, 8 km from Ottapalam, a town in Palakkad district. His home, Kalakkathu Bhavanam, is preserved as a memorial and is a museum of Ottamthullal and related art forms. A library named 'Kunchan Memorial Library has archved manuscripts and documents related to performing arts of Kerala
